Political and civil unrest, wars and other conflicts are regularly raising concerns with regard to the safety of navigation and the safety and welfare of seafarers visiting ports belonging to countries involved in such conflicts.

The Cabinet Council of the Republic of Panama has approved canal toll increases of 12-16% for all vessel sectors, with most taking effect from 1 January 2011.
Toll rises for reefers alone will be delayed until 1 April 2011. The pricing structure for box ships will also change under the new system.

The ISM Code provides an International standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.

The International Transport Intermediaries Club (ITIC) said it has seen an increase in the number of professional indemnity (PI) claims made against the professional service providers who are its members.

 There are concerns of the  carriage of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) by sea caused by the casualties on board of the Ythan (an explosion and the tragic loss of life in 2004) and the Adamandas (sinking with the cargo and bunkers on board in 2003).

The New Inspection Regime will be implemented by the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Port State Control. The NIR replaces the existing PSC regime on 1 January 2011.
