War Risks excluded areas by the Joint War Committee August 2010


Political and civil unrest, wars and other conflicts are regularly raising concerns with regard to the safety of navigation and the safety and welfare of seafarers visiting ports belonging to countries involved in such conflicts.
 
The Joint War Risks Committee (JWC) reviewed and revised its Hull War, Strikes, Terrorism and Related Perils Listed Areas revised 2 August 2010, as follows:
 
Africa
•Djibouti excluding transit
•Eritrea, but only South of 15° N

Modifications to Panama Canal pricing structure with effect from 2011


The Cabinet Council of the Republic of Panama has approved canal toll increases of 12-16% for all vessel sectors, with most taking effect from 1 January 2011.
Toll rises for reefers alone will be delayed until 1 April 2011. The pricing structure for box ships will also change under the new system.

 The rusting process is an electrochemical reaction. All common metals, such as Aluminium, Zinc, Cast Iron & Stainless steel corrode in much the same way & the corrosion process described here for steel occurs in a similar manner on those metals.

This paper deals with the corrosion of marine ballast tanks and the lifetime assessment of their coatings. The techniques and mechanistic models have been developed to enable a clear and quantitative assessment of the remaining useable ballast tank lifetime to be reached. The ability to make an accurate decision in this area enables:
 
a) A cost effective maintenance and repair strategy.
b) Expensive repairs and steel renewals to be avoided.
